Audit Realibility Model AERM
Introduction
At Crest Advisory Africa, we continue to innovate and lead in the field of Governance, Risk, and Compliance Auditing. Our newest contribution to audit integrity and reporting excellence is the development and implementation of the Audit Evidence Reliability Model (AERM). This framework helps organizations standardize the credibility and impact of various types of audit evidence to support stronger, defensible audit outcomes.
What is the Audit Evidence Reliability Model (AERM)?
The Audit Evidence Reliability Model (AERM) is a structured hierarchy that ranks different types of audit evidence based on their reliability.
It empowers auditors and assurance professionals to classify findings more consistently, prioritise high-impact evidence, and guide stakeholders with confidence
AERM Pyramid - From Least to Most Reliable Evidence
- Level 1: Verbal Evidence
Oral statements from personnel obtained during interviews. Least reliable due to subjectivity and lack of proof
- Level 2: Observation
Visual inspections without recorded data. Useful but lacks documentation or validation
- Level 3: Documentary Evidence
Written policies, SOPs, and logs. Offers some credibility but is internal and potentially biased
- Level 4: Technical Evidence
Auditor's personal notes and tool/process assessments. Moderate reliability with firsthand observations
- Level 5: Analytical Evidence
Data-driven insights such as degradation rates or statistical reviews. Reliable when methods are sound
- Level 6: Confirmative Evidence
Third-party confirmation of compliance or inspection. Highly reliable due to independence
- Level 7: Physical/Mathematical Evidence
Measured, direct, and physical proof such as readings, measurements, or scientific analysis. The gold standard of reliability
Strategic Impact of AERM for Internal Audit
Integrating AERM into your internal audit function will improve the accuracy, consistency, and strategic relevance of your audit findings. For organisations implementing ISO 9001, ISO 31000, or ISO 19011 audit frameworks, this model is a perfect fit to elevate audit quality and transparency
Why Crest Advisory Africa is the Benchmark in ISO-Based Auditing
